Ace raises funds for children’s organization

Ace raises funds for children’s organization

Ace Hardware’s 2012 Children’s Miracle Network campaign, which ran through October, raised $20,000 for the organization. Ace stores asked customers if they would like to donate to the organization, with each donor receiving a mobile he could write his name on and stick on the store’s wall.

The money raised this year represented a 30 percent increase over last year’s total.

Wintner joins
Sea Shepherd board

Robert Wintner has accepted a position on the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society board of directors. “Snorkel Bob” Wintner is known for his defense of marine species and habitat.

Wintner has championed the cause of reef fish for many years.

Honey challenge winners announced

This year’s Hawaiian Natural Honey Challenge included award categories expanded to reflect varietal types of honey, the category of comb honey was added and multifloral blends were divided into three types — light, amber and dark. A total of 52 entries were submitted by producers from around the state.

Award winning entries and their submitters in the liquid category are: Best in show, Ron Hanson of Bee Mo Bettah; best albizia honey, John Hanson; best kiawe honey, Jenny Bach of Bee Love Apiary; best taste for a lehua blend honey, Jen Rasmussen of Paradise Nectars; best appearance, best texture for a lehua blend honey, Julie Myhre of J&J Coffee & Cacao; best macadamia honey, John Hanson; best mac plus honey; Joyce Takahashi of Miki Macs Honey, Kauai; best mango honey and best ohia/lehua honey; John Hanson; best appearance for a ohia/lehua honey, Greg Johnson; best tropical multifloral light honey, Larry Reiss of Parsantha Apiary; best tropical multifloral amber honey, Ron Hanson of Bee Mo Bettah; best aroma for a tropical multifloral amber honey, Callie McNew; best tropical multifloral dark honey, Tony Lydgate of Steelgrass Farm, Kauai.

Award winning entries in the comb honey category are: best in show, Larry Reiss of Parsantha Apiary; best macadamia honey, Ron Hanson of Bee Mo Bettah; best mac plus honey, Joyce Takahashi of Miki Macs Honey; best lehua blend honey, Carol Conner of Jaycee’s Bees.

Award winning entries in the solid honey category are: best in show, Henry Iuker of Daddy’s Stolen Honey; best lehua blend honey, John Hanson; best texture for a ohia/lehua honey, Henry Iuker of Daddy’s Stolen Honey; best tropical multifloral dark honey, Patrick Weder of Lotus Buddhist Monastery.

The entries winning this year’s three people’s choice awards are: best liquid honey, John Hanson; best comb honey, Ron Hanson of Bee Mo Bettah; best solid honey, Patrick Weder of Lotus Buddhist Monastery.

Crafting event slated at Captain Cook nursery

Tropical Edibles Nursery will hold a “Crafting Fair” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8 at its facility in Captain Cook. Staff will be on hand to offer ideas, assistance and plant material to aid in creating gifts and decorations for the holidays.

Several tables will be set up to make holiday candles, angel and snowman ornaments, herbal kitchen wreaths, tea collections, as well as decorative pots for edible plants. At noon, a salad from the nursery will be offered for those who bring a potluck dish. The event is free and all are welcome to come and get ideas that include local plant material for the holidays.

A $5 donation is requested for each item created and taken home. The donation is to cover supplies, information and instruction offered.

New businesses open at Queens’ Marketplace

Queens’ Marketplace continues to grow and evolve, with new and expanding businesses. Recently opened Harry Wishard Gallery and Century 21 All Islands, plus a larger space for Blue Wilderness Dive Adventures, bring additional fine Hawaii arts, real estate services and ocean activities into the center.

Hawaii artist Wishard brings his evocative oil paintings and an eclectic group of fine Hawaii artists such as Kathy Long, Victoria McCormick, Lynn Capell, Mary Koski and Ed Kayton to his gallery.

Broker-in-Charge Charlie Perry said the Century 21 office offers vacation or second homes, investment properties, condos or townhouses.

Blue Wilderness Dive Adventures expands its retail space with a selection of underwater cameras and equipment, diver’s watches, dive and snorkel gear and beach necessities from the best names in diving. It also offers ocean adventures and dive and snorkel equipment, surfboards and boogie boards for rent.
